WHERE ARE YOU LOOKING?
Caught Up In The Moment
Dazzled by the glistening stars, my friend pedaled her bicycle down the quiet street. Mesmerized by their twinkling beauty, face thrust toward heaven, she reveled in the wonder of it all—until she tasted blood on her lip. Sprawled on the dewy grass she realized a ‘curb had jumped in front of her.’
Thankfully, nothing was broken.
Veering off course and crashing is a real possibility if we fail to keep our eyes focused on where we are headed.
If I am not careful, gawking at diversions can captivate my attention and catapult me into a pit of distress. Distracted by all things shiny, I can easily drift and find myself in a heap of troubling cares—stunned and dazed.
Look Here
The book of Hebrews counsels us to concentrate on Jesus. To look at Christ—His life, His trials, His final success, and the victory He secured through the cross.
Jesus is the Author and Perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2) When I remember He finishes everything He begins, including my faith, my eyes are peeled, eager to behold His perfecting work.
When my focus is on Him and what He has done, I am less tempted to blaze my own trail. Resting in the security of Christ’s triumphant work and relishing the blessings that flow from His faithfulness provokes praise. His goodness encourages me to stay the course and live in truth — to obey Him, and go His way, instead of my own.
Venture Forth
While keeping my eyes on Him doesn’t guarantee a journey without potholes, hills, or flat tires, I am more likely to avoid ditches or cruising off of cliffs. Reminding myself that this journey of faith is leading me to a delightful destination is like shimmery handlebar streamers and a tinkling bike bell.
Go ahead friend and pedal for pleasure while enjoying the stars, the breeze caressing your hair, with waving streamers and an occasional bell ring, but keep your eyes focused on Jesus. He is the Way and our final destination.
Grow in the root of all grace, which is faith.
Believe God’s promises more firmly than ever.
Allow your faith to increase in its fullness, firmness, and simplicity.
